The area around the Willows offers outstanding Natural History in particular Northam and Braunton Burrows, situated either side of the Taw Torridge estuary and is an important destination for migratory birds, in particular winter waders, which feed up and down the estuary in conjunction with the tides. Species include (All year round) Spoonbill, Little Egret, Peregrine, Little owl, Tawny Owl, Kingfisher, Water rail, Merlin, Barn Owl, Grey Heron. Autumn and Winter species can include Great Northern Diver, Eider Ducks, Osprey, Jack Snipe, Firecrest, Short Eared Owl, Brent Geese, Marsh Harrier, Bittern and Snow Bunting. Unusual species recently have included: Collared Pratincole, Wryneck, Pelican, Whiskered Tern, Crane, Cattle egret, Great White Egret.










Inland wildlife is equally as rich as that on the coast, with a good population of otters, kingfishers and dippers found in the local rivers, is a good indicator in showing how healthy the rivers Torridge and Taw are and warrant further discovery by the budding naturalist inside you or those interested in discovering the natural world.
Other specialist environments close to The Willows, such as culm grassland, dunes, ancient woodland, forest, and moorland all offer specialist species to study. One environment not to be missed is the intertidal zone (rockpools). Below is a glimpse into what can be encountered at low tide in the rock pools around Westward Ho! these rock pools are not merely picturesque scenes but crucial habitats for a diverse array of marine life, playing an integral role in the delicate balance of the entire ecosystem. The intertidal zones of the biosphere sustain a rich biodiversity, offering refuge to countless species, from small crustaceans to vibrant seaweeds.
